A new bridge, called the Shenzhong Link, opened on Sunday afternoon. It connects the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan, making travel between the two cities much faster – only 30 minutes instead of two hours.
This project was a big challenge and took seven years to build with the help of 150,000 workers. The bridge has some special features, like a very long main span and an S-shaped design to keep drivers awake.
The project also included the construction of the Shenzhong Tunnel, which is the biggest and widest undersea concrete-tube tunnel in the world. The most challenging part of building the tunnel was placing 32 giant tubes underwater using advanced remote control technology.

The project’s chief engineer is proud to have worked on this project, as well as the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which is the longest cross-sea bridge-tunnel in the world. To keep traffic safe inside the tunnel, a smart traffic control system was designed to detect accidents and manage emergencies.

The Shenzhong (Shenzhen-Zhongshan) Link, a massive cross-sea infrastructure project connecting cities on both sides of the Pearl River Estuary(珠江口), opened to traffic at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Before the opening, the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan was approximately two hours; now, it has been reduced to around 30 minutes.
The Shenzhong Link is considered one of the most challenging cross-sea transportation projects in the world and has set 10 world records. It stands as a new landmark in the Lingdingyang sea area.
The construction of this colossal engineering endeavor, which involved the unwavering dedication of around 150,000 workers at its peak, began in December 2016 and was completed over seven years.
The project spans 24 kilometers and includes the underwater Shenzhong Tunnel, two man-made islands, and two bridges. The main bridge, the Shenzhong Bridge, has a main span of 1,666 meters, making it the world’s longest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. It features a navigational clearance of 76.5 meters, earning it the title of the world’s highest sea bridge with the highest clearance for maritime traffic.

The S-shaped bridge was designed to keep drivers alert and its pillars are situated perpendicular to the flow of the sea, allowing seawater to efficiently flow by. The bridge has two anchorages, each weighing 1 million tons. The anchorages’ bases, each about the size of 17 basketball courts, counterbalance the weight of the bridge and can withstand vehicles weighing up to 100,000 tons.
Meanwhile, the two-way eight-lane Shenzhong Tunnel is the largest and widest undersea steel-shell concrete-tube tunnel in the world, with a length of 6.8 kilometers and a width of up to 55.46 meters. One of the tunnel project’s greatest challenges was transporting 32 giant tubes, each weighing 80,000 tons, and precisely placing them underwater. Advanced remote control technology was utilized to achieve millimeter-precision underwater alignment, setting a new world record.
Ning Jinjin, vice chief engineer of the Shenzhong Link project, expressed pride in the accomplishment, having also worked on the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the longest cross-sea bridge-tunnel in the world. A smart traffic control system has been devised to safeguard traffic inside the tunnel, using different types of sensors to detect accidents and manage emergencies.
What is one of the world records set by the Shenzhong (Shenzhen-Zhongshan) Link project?
A) Longest underwater tunnel in the world
B) Longest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge in the world
C) Tallest man-made island in the world
D) Largest cross-sea transportation project in the world
B) Longest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge in the world
Explanation: The article states that the main span of the Shenzhong Bridge is 1,666 meters long, making it the world’s longest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. It is one of the ten world records set by the Shenzhong Link project.
